The aviation industry group Airlines for America says U.S. airline passengers won't need to downsize their carry-on luggage despite what they may have heard.
The International Air Transport Association, a multinational organization representing airlines worldwide, recently proposed new voluntary guidelines aimed at improving passenger experience. One recommendation included smaller size limits for carry-on bags than are currently in place on most airlines.
The proposal touched off a storm of criticism, and on Wednesday A4A joined the chorus by announcing that no U.S. airlines support reducing the maximum size for carry-on bags. A4A said IATA's recommendation was "unnecessary" and "flies in the face of the actions the U.S. carriers are taking to invest in the customer experience."
"Our members already have guidelines in place on what size bags they can accommodate, making this action unnecessary," A4A CEO Nick Calio said. http://bit.ly/1H0P1yx
That same day, IATA announced it was suspending the program that led to the recommendation in light of the concerns expressed "primarily in North America."
"This is clearly an issue that is close to the heart of travelers. We need to get it right," said Tom Windmuller, IATA senior vice president of airport, passenger, cargo and security. http://bit.ly/1Imj6U4
